About the language

Hiligaynon or Ilonggo is an Austronesian language spoken in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. It is a member of the Visayan language family and is concentrated in the provinces of Iloilo and Negros Occidental. It is also spoken in the other provinces of Panay island such as Capiz, Antique, Aklan and Guimaras, and in many parts of the Philippines’ southern island of Mindanao like Koronadal City, South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat. There are approximately 7,000,000 people in and outside the Philippines who are native speakers of Hiligaynon, and an additional 4,000,000 who are capable of speaking it with a substantial degree of proficiency.

The distinction between the the dialect called Ilonggo and that called Hiligaynon is not very clear. “Ilonggo” is the term name used in Negros Occidental, and in Iloilo. Even among Philippine language specialists and native laymen, there is a lot of disagreement about the correct term. Some consider Hiligaynon basically as a citified language spoken mainly in Iloilo City, a softer and gentler version of the different versions of Kinaray-a which are the real mother tongues of the people living in the rest of Panay island: in Capiz, Antique, and Aklan.

Ilonggo is also the name of the people living in Panay and the culture associated with the people speaking Hiligaynon.

About the language

Cebuano, also known as Sugboanon, is an Austronesian language spoken in the Philippines by about 20,000,000 (ethnologue) people. It is a subgroup or member of Bisaya, Visayan and Binisayâ language family. The name came from the Philippine island of Cebu, with the Spanish suffix -ano meaning native, of a place, added at the end.

Cebuano speaking people, however, are not confined to Cebu. There are several regions in the Philippines’ southern island of Mindanao that speak the language. For this reason, some insist that the language should properly be called Binisaya.

About the language

Kinaray-a is an Austronesian language spoken mainly in Antique Province in the Philippines. It is also spoken in several parts of Iloilo together with Hiligaynon. Due to regional proximity, media and television stations, Kinaray-a speakers can understand Hiligaynon speakers. However, only Hiligaynon speakers who reside in Kinaray-a speaking areas can understand the language. Those who come from other areas, like Negros, have difficulty in understanding the language, if they can at all.Kinaray-a belongs to the Visayan language family. Contrary to some misconceptions, Kinaray-a is not a variation of Hiligaynon; the two belong to two different, but related, language subgroups.
